Rakel Carlander rugs can be separated into two different categories. The kilims are either single coloured, in colours such as blue, red, green or yellow, and with a decorative edge, or they have geometrical patterns such as squares or circles, based in the colours brown or blue.
Unfortunately, despite her considerable success as a designer, the background and origin of this Scandinavian artist remains obscure. Little is known about her apart from her vintage rugs, and that she lived and worked in Sweden during the country’s great carpet renaissance.
We have not been able to verify if her surname was spelled Carlander or Callander. Both versions are found online. The spelling Carlander could be a confusion with the very productive weaving studio Carlander.
Rakel Carlander or Callander signed her carpets RC.
